Wintergreen essential oil is a pale yellow sometimes pinkish in color and has that strong characteristic sweet woody minty medicinal scent of wintergreen. Along with Birch, Wintergreens are the only plants that naturally contain methyl salicylate. Wintergreen essential oil contains 85-99 % of methyl salicylate the main component in aspirin. Wintergreen Essential Oil has similar effects to cortisone that relieve pain quickly. Methyl salicylate has been incorporated in ointments for muscular skeletal problems. Wintergreen has been used as a flavoring agent for tooth paste, chewing gum, sodas and in mint flavorings. One unexpected use is rust removal and degreasing of machine parts.

Properties: Antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, aromatic, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, astringent, analgesic, anodyne, carminative, diuretic, disinfectant, emenagogue, anticoagulant, vasodilator and stimulant
Uses/Benefits: pain reliever, easy respiratory and sinus issues, helps with skin disorders when added to lotions, arthritis, asthma, headaches, gout, swelling, excessive body temperatures, used in massage therapy for joint and muscles pain
Blends well with: basil, birch, geranium, cypress, eucalyptus, juniper, lavender, lemongrass, peppermint, spearmint, and ylang ylang
Caution: Due to the high content of Menthyl Salicylate, wintergreen essential oil is highly toxic and should never be ingested. Use in small doses. Do not use if allergic to asprin. Persons who are hyper-reactive to salicylates should avoid using this oil.
