Milk Thistle, also known by many other names such as Marian thistle, Mary Thistle, and Scotch thistle, is a member of the Asteraceae plant family, the same family that includes the daisy and sunflower. Used for thousands of years for its antioxidant properties. As an antioxidant, the benefits of milk thistle are similar to other healing nutrients, like Vitamin C, which help fight free radical damage and slow the aging process. Milk Thistle Seed Oil contains high levels of lipophilic extracts, which act as bioflavanoid antioxidants that increase immunity and slow down oxidative stress.
According to the National Institute of Health, there’s some compelling research showing that taking silymarin, the main chemical found in milk thistle, along with conventional treatments, can help control symptoms of diabetes by helping with glycemic control.
Silymarin has also been used to treat alcoholic liver diease, viral hepatitis and other liver diseases.
Milk Thistle is a great detoxifier for the body and also promotes digestive health. Abundant in sterols, essential fatty acids and vitamin E; the clear, light yellow oil expressed from the seeds is often incorporated into skincare formulations for its antioxidant, anti-aging, moisturizing and skin protectant benefits. This oil has a bland aroma and mixes well with other oils. Milk Thistle Seed Oil's properties are similiar to sunflower oil - deemed to be a good choice for most skin types.
