Lavender oil is almost as common and utilized as lemon oil in aromatherapy and alternative medicine circles. It is derived from the distillation of the lavender flower spikes. Such alternative medicine experts suggest using lavender oil as a pain reliever and antiseptic for minor burns, sunburns, insect bites, and scratches. Lavender has been long used for its relaxation and calming properties. It's scent has a calming effect, and some suggest can help to reduce anxiety. Some use lavender oil in diffusers, vaporizers, or even rubbing it on the skin to help relieve tension headaches, coughs, or respiratory infections. Lavender oil is also utilized by many as a massage oil component, to help relieve joint pain, muscle aches, and chest congestion. Lavender perfume is an adequate mosquito repellant, and can also be infused with shampoos or soaps. Surprisingly, lavender oil is even being studied for its supposed effect of reducing mammary tumors in lab rats. As with any essential oil, please be sure to do your own extensive research before utilizing these products.
