Soapstone burners are the burners of choice for many who frequently use essential or fragrance oils because of its composition. Soapstone, also known as soaprock or steatite, is a metamorphic rock made from the mineral talc. Soapstone gets its name because its relatively a soft rock and may feel soapy when touched. Since it is softer than harder rocks such as marble and granite, it is easier to work without the need of specialized tools for craving designs used in home décor, thus making it a less expensive alternative. A soapstone burner provides even, constant heat. Although it takes longer to heat than glass or metal, once heated it retains heat for a long time. One ideal benefit of using a soapstone burner is that it does not react chemically with other substances such as acids found in some essential oils. With other materials, the reactions may include staining and changing or alternating the fragrance of oil. Soapstone burners can also withstand high temperatures without cracking. Soapstone is nonporous, any stains will remain of the surface and can be scoured off, although cleaning can typically be done with warm soapy water. This much different than the marble and granite alternative, which requires sealing periodcally to avoid deep or permanent stains. Large Soapstone burner is 5 inches tall.
