Although, Litsea cubeba was used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine; it was not introduced to Western cultures till 1950’s. After that it became popular in fragrances and perfumes because of its lemon-like scent. Additionally, it helps anchor other citrus top notes that will fade quickly. Its aroma has made it popular in soaps, detergents, and candle making. Its aroma has been compared to Lemon Verbena and Lemongrass, though many would describe it as finer, softer and sweeter than Lemongrass. This essential oil is also used in the chemical industry for the synthesis of Vitamin A and violet-like fragrances. Cosmetically, Litsea Cubeba essential oil is used in skin toners and astringents to prevent acne.
Litsea Cubeba is sometimes referred to as May Chang, Exotic verbena, tropical verbena.
