Life sometimes feels like a merciless, nonstop brain workout. We have phone calendars so we can try to stay on track. We have simple goals and everyday tasks — like “buy milk” – that we continually forget because we have so much on our minds. If this sounds all too familiar, remember this one word: vetiver.
Vetiver Essential Oil
Vetiver is a perennial grass native to India, though it is also grown in various tropical regions. When you distil the roots of the vetiver plant with steam, you create vetiver essential oil, an oil that is often hailed as an “attention support” aid. It is an expensive essential oil compared to other options like tea tree, eucalyptus, lemongrass, so vetiver oil is often sold after being diluted with other oils; before you buy it, verify that it is authentic and 100% pure.
Vetiver oil is said to provide the following benefits:
- stress relief
- tension release
- improved sleep
For this reason, vetiver may have the potential to help declutter the mind and aid a person with daily life management. This attention support can go a long way in our busy lives, but there is a potentially special use for this essential oil as well.
Vetiver Oil and ADHD
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has become an increased concern throughout the United States, especially with regard to children. A study conducted by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) revealed that by 2001, 11% of children in the United States were diagnosed with ADHD. Although research does indicate that social and environmental factors are causes or risk factors, they “might make symptoms worse.” Since most who are diagnosed are children, the ADHD diagnosis can affect the social environment for entire families.
Vetiver essential oil is said to relieve stress and tension, both of which can affect ADHD symptoms. In a 2001 study conducted by Dr. Terry Friedman referencing vetiver essential oil and ADHD, stating that smelling vetiver essential oil improved the performance of children with ADD and ADHD by 100 percent. Vetiver oil helped children combat their symptoms, including difficulties with:
- becoming focused
- staying organized
- following directions
Along with stress and tension relief, vetiver essential oil offers other benefits that can help combat ADHD symptoms. Vetiver essential oil is may help symptoms of anxiety, depression, and mental fatigue, all of which can compound the challenges of dealing with ADHD. It also may help with insomnia; and better rest means better emotional balance, less anxiety, and better physical health.
People with ADHD generally have a hard time focusing, and children with ADHD may have a hard time controlling their behavior. Although vetiver essential oil might help a person deal with these and other ADHD symptoms, this article does not recommend using vetiver essential oil as a treatment for ADHD. The CDC states that “the cause(s) and risk factors for ADHD are unknown,” but there are various medically acceptable ways to treat ADHD, including behavioral therapy and FDA-approved medications.
Whether you’re thinking about using vetiver essential oil to help with ADHD symptoms or help manage a hectic life, you should first consult with your doctor, a certified aromatherapist, or another qualified healthcare professional.
